The microbiome plays a vital role in livestock health, nutrition, and productivity. It supports digestion, nutrient uptake, immune
system development, and overall health. Accurate understanding and management of the microbiome are essential for sustainable
and efficient livestock farming. Globally, the industry is investing more in microbiome research, which is advancing rapidly.
Consequently, the need for microbiome experts is expected to grow, emphasizing the importance of microbiome training and
research.
The project aims to train a group of doctoral candidates (DC) in critical areas of the livestock microbiome that need innovative
solutions to reduce environmental impact, improve animal health, boost livestock productivity, and promote sustainability. It equips
the DCs with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to carry out research, including running clinical trials and exploring the
roles and potential uses of complex microbial communities.
The overall aim of the proposal is to train 13 doctoral candidates (DCs) in specialized projects related to microbiome research in large
and small ruminants and pigs. The program will involve seven universities, four research institutions, and seven private companies,
industries, and the European Federation of Animal Science, spanning seven countries. Its primary objectives are to carry out research
and training activities for each DC, both locally and through the network, focusing on microbiome studies and transferable skills. The
program is multidisciplinary, intersectoral, and international, covering microbiology, immunology, systems biology, molecular
biology, bioinformatics, and data science—key areas for data analysis and interpretation. Additionally, the DCs will gain experience in
dynamic industrial and non-academic environments, enhancing their skills and preparing them for careers in industry and business
within a diverse, interdisciplinary setting.
